Episode 34 - 1999 Season Review
The 1999 Atlanta Braves were sort of a last gasp of the great 1990s Braves teams. They were the most recent Braves team to go to a World Series, and in retrospect they seem to have been the beginning of the slow decline. Yet they might also have been slightly underrated. Certainly, the Jones boys, Andruw and Chipper, were excellent, and Bobby Cox managed the entire team perfectly. The team also still had great pitching, especially with 24 year olds Kevin Millwood and John Rocker. Rocker was the ultimate problem, though, as his infamous Sports Illustrated interview came out after the 1999 season. Maybe Rocker's pigheadedness and bigotry cast a curse on the Braves, but maybe the team just wasn't as talented.
