November 8 - 1923 - The Beer Hall Putsch
Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party first attempted to take power by capturing the Staatskomissar, effectively regional dictator, for the State of Bavaria Gustav von Kahr while he was giving a speech to a large crowd in a beer hall. This attempted putsch succeeded initially in holding Kahr, but he refused to give up his own power to the Nazis, and when the Nazis decided to march to the Munich city council, they ran into the military. Hitler would end up being jailed for treason, although his five year sentence ended up being only nine months. His entire experience would reshape the nature of the Nazi Party and the course of Hitler's political career, making him focus on regular democratic means to take power.
