May 30 - 1854 - The Kansas-Nebraska Act is Signed Into Law

Sen. Stephen Douglas of Illinois thought he had a great compromise over slavery in the territories and a way to bring in new states when he authored the Kansas-Nebraska Act. After President Franklin Pierce signed it into law, the Territory of Kansas exploded into a minor civil war. "Bleeding Kansas" would presage the actual American Civil War and provide a violent platform for pro-slavery and anti-slavery militias to develop.
