June 19 - 1865 - Juneteenth

The announcement that General Gordon Granger made from a balcony in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 was really the last one to proclaim that slaves were now free. Yet it became the moment that was celebrated as the real end of slavery almost immediately, despite it coming two and a half years after the official announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln. The recognition and celebration of Juneteenth demonstrates how historical memory gets set and preserved.
