June 2 - 1962 - The Battle of Santiago

The Battle of Santiago was the creative appellation given to a soccer match between the Italian and Chilean national teams during the 1962 World Cup in Chile. Apart from many fouls and fights, the match also required repeated police intervention, just to keep the players from injuring each other too badly. Yet the after-effect of such a match was actually quite significant, bringing about many changes thanks to the match referee, Englishman Ken Aston.
