July 26 - 1953 - The Attack on the Moncanda Barracks

The first attempt Fidel Castro made to overthrow the Cuban government led by Fulgencio Batista was an attack on the Moncanda Barracks in Santiago de Cuba in 1953. It did not go well for Castro, as quite a few of his men die and most of the rest are captured, with the result that he ends up in prison with his followers. Yet Batista's autocratic and repressive response to the Moncanda Barracks attack largely helped Castro and his movement, to the point where the movement became known as Movimiento 26 Julio, or the 26th July Movement.
