July 29 - 615 - K'inich Janaab' Pakal Takes the Throne of Palenque
K'inich Janaab' Pakal was one of the truly great Mayan rulers, being ajaw of the city-state of Palenque for nearly 70 years and raising it to prominence over its rivals. Of course, no matter how impressive Pakal was, knowing precisely what happened in the Mayan cultural region in the seventh century is strikingly impressive in and of itself. The precise dating of events can be credited to the genius and specificity of the rather complex Mayan calendar, which was really three overlapping calendars. After inscriptions were found in archaeological renovations in the twentieth century, the Maya calendar allowed people to figure out who ruled what city and who built what.
