August 1 - 1966 - Charles Whitman's Killing Spree
Charles Whitman was an engineering student at the University of Texas and a former Marine who appeared to be happily married and making a life for himself. But on August 1, Whitman killed his mother and then his wife, loaded up a foot locker with guns, ammunition, and supplies, and went to the observation deck of the tower on top of the Main Administration building. From there, Whitman opened fire, killing 14 and wounding 36. After shooting for an hour and a half, Whitman was shot by an Austin Police Officer named Houston McCoy, who had to invade the observation deck. The killing spree by Charles Whitman was hard to understand in 1966, but might be even harder to understand after so many other spree killers.
