August 13 - 1521 - The Fall of Tenochtitlan
The Fall of Tenochtitlan is one of those signal moments in history, which is so important that it's basically impossible to understate its importance. Hernan Cortes has received credit as the "Conqueror of the Aztecs," although that title can be slightly misleading. Cortes did not ride at the head of a large army which crushed the Aztec Empire, nor was he viewed as a god by Aztecs like later legend would say. He was a striver who used his wits, cunning, and guile to first make himself the Magistrate of Mexico and then through a series of strange events ended up taking over the Aztec Empire of Tenochtitlan.
