August 16 - 1977 - The Death of Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley was perhaps the most significant cultural icon in America from the 1950s onward. When he was found dead in a bathroom at his mansion Graceland in Memphis, it was more than the death of a legend. Somehow his death, brought about by years of hard living and prescription drug abuse, made Elvis even more significant in American culture. He was both the legendary King of Rock 'n' Roll and a bizarre tabloid figure, with reports of Elvis sightings across the country becoming as much of his legend as the hit singles. The Elvis of modern culture was only brought about after his death.
