August 20 - 1940 - The Assassination of Leon Trotsky
Leon Trotsky had been living in exile for forty years when Ramon Mercader attacked him with an ice axe in his study at his home in Mexico City. Although one of the key leaders of the Russian Revolution and the early Soviet government under Vladimir Lenin, Trotsky had a deep seated rivalry with Joseph Stalin. When Stalin took power, Trotsky was deported and then continually under threat from assassins. Despite this constant threat, Trotsky avoided assassination until he encountered someone as singularly weird and devoted as Raon Mercader, a Catalan born Soviet agent pretending to be a French Canadian.
