August 29 - 1526 - The Battle of Mohács
In 1526, Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I led his large, modern army into Central Europe to attack the Kingdom of Hungary. This was not the first Ottoman attack on Hungary, but it proved to be the decisive one. King Louis II of Hungary met him with an old fashioned army and poor tactics, resulting in massive casualties and his own death. After the Battle of Mohács, the Ottoman Empire had a certain foothold in Central Europe, although they did not fully conquer Hungary for another two decades.
