August 6 - 1945 - The United States Air Force Drops an Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima
The dropping of an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima by the United States Air Force plane Enola Gay was only the second time an atomic bomb was ever detonated and the first time in war. The idea was to force Japan to surrender before a costly land invasion of Japan's main islands. While US leadership knew the bomb would be destructive, they did not really know just how totally devastating it would be in an urban landscape. Remarkably, though, this bombing did not end the war. Only the second bombing of a Japanese city, at Nagasaki three days later, would force Emperor Hirohito to finally surrender.
