September 6 - 1972 - The Munich Olympic Hostage Crisis Ends in a Massacre
A large portion of the Israeli Olympic delegation to the 1972 games in Munich were taken hostage by a Palestinian terrorist organization, and eventually all the hostages and five of the eight kidnappers. This is famous, but the basic knowledge of the event passes over the truly strange elements of everything to do with the event. Black September, the group who perpetrated the attack, had a strange relationship with Palestinian leadership and operated mostly. The German authorities could have prevented it at almost every step of the way. The Israeli Olympic team could have had even more fatalities, but a few individuals managed to save others.
