September 8 - 1935 - The Assassination of Huey P. Long
Huey Long had much more power in Louisiana than Senators usually do in their home states, both because he had previously been governor and had purposely built a complex power structure in the state government. That was why he wanted to be in the State Capitol building when a redistricting bill was passed by the legislature. It's also why Dr. Carl Weiss, a 28 year old physician, confronted Huey Long in the State Capitol that day and shot him. Weiss' father-in-law was specifically targeted by the bill, which gave him a direct motive, but he was far from the only Louisianan who hated Huey Long.
